Sampling and Managing Spatial Variability
Dr. Harold Reetz

Proper management of soil variability and fertility increase land values and reduce grower risk. Fall soil sampling is recommended, but sampling patterns and intensity are more flexible depending on the cropping system, inherent nutrient variability, and other factors. In some fields intensive, grid sampling generates the best fertilizer recommendations and in others, sampling by soil type is a better approach. Regardless of the approach, soil sampling is a management tool that can major impact on nutrient management and the economics of the farm operation. Managing soil nutrients is not a simple process, but site-specific technologies are making it easier to make the right decisions that will enhance farmer profit.
