Fall Nitrogen Management for Agronomic Response and Environmental Protection

Government agency reports suggest that agriculture is the major contributor to non-point source nutrient pollution of surface waters and that excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization is a major problem. But fertilizer N management has improved and is friendlier to the environment. Fall applied N can be managed such that environmental impacts are minimized and economic benefits are maximized. Proper application rate, placement method, N source, timing and use of nitrification inhibitors are management practices that should be considered when applying N in the fall.
