Summer 2003- Great Success after INPOFOS involvement on a three hundred thousand hectare project that included GPS and Sugarcane Balanced Fertilization-
The 2002-2003 sugarcane harvest just ended ( June 10) and excellent results were obtained by those sugarcane fields that used INPOFOS fertilizer recommendations. As You may remember, INPOFOS was selected by the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture to diagnose and recommend the fertilizer formulas to be used by the government managed Sugar Factories (nationalized in September 2001). The sugar factories were 25 and the Sugarcane area to work with was around 300,000 hectares. After an intense work with field technicians of the Sugar Industry using GPS and GIS to analize the information, INPOFOS recommended several fertilizer formulas to be used by the farmers. Close to 80% of the area used INPOFOS formulas during 2002.... Results are shown in the table below. Most formulas included a significant increase in P and K in most cases a 50% in K rates was recommended... and it worked.

Sugar (sucrose) Produced also increased this year. More than 300,000 tons of Sucrose was the net increase when you compare harvest from 2001-2002 vs 2002-2003. Despite a delay in fertilizer aplication and a bad "sucrose" year.... Results are confirmed: Better P and K fertilization increased total biomass and sucrose % was not significantly different compared with the one obtained in 2001-2002. The graph below confirms an increase in total sucrose production during 2002-2003 of the 25 Sugar Factories that entered the program.

INPOFOS is not working with the group of Sugar Factories but hopes they keep adding enough P and K and maintain balance fertilizartion as a squeme to keep yields high and quality improving year after year.
During 2003 INPOFOS is working with other Sugarcane Groups like PIASA (Coca-Cola), SEOANE and others that, after seen last year's success, wanted to modify their fertilization methods and formulas.... We will see if we can raise to this new challenge!.
