New all time record in phosphate fertilizer imports to Mexico/Nuevo record de importación de fertilizantes fosfatados por México

Mexico imports several phosphate fertilizer sources, including monoammonium phosphate (MAP, NH4H2PO4), diammonium phosphate (DAP, [NH4]2HPO4), simple superphosphate (SSP, Ca[H2PO4]2+CaSO4), and triple superphosphate (TSP, Ca[H2PO4]2).

Figure 1 shows MAP imports from 1995 to April of 2003. During 2000, 70 percent of MAP was imported from the U.S. and 14 percent from Morocco. MAP imports dropped that year after three years of keeping levels close to 135,000 metric tons per year. About 94, 77, 51, 51, 68 and 62 percent of MAP imports came from the U.S. in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 respectively. During 2002 MAP imports showed a new all-time record!!

DAP imports have been increasing since 1995 (Figure 2) due to the popularity of this P source among Mexican farmers. Although México is a DAP producer, almost 97 percent of all DAP comes from the U.S. The numbers for 2002 registered a new great increase in DAP imports with more than 440,000 metric tons!!

Simple superphosphate and TSP are grouped together in the foreign trade classification. Figure 3 shows imports of both products. Relative to MAP and DAP, importation of these two P sources were rather small from 1997 to 1999. Volumes were low because México produces SSP and TSP. In addition, transportation costs and low fertilizer efficiency were decreasing demand of these fertilizers, however, imports increase in 2000 and 2001, and 2002 show a significantly increase in P2O5 imports. Most of the imports come from the U.S.

Total P2O5 imports have been steadily increasing since 1995 (Figure 4). Imports peaked in 2001 at 247,264 metric tons. Results in 2002 showed an exceptional increase in P2O5 imports over the average of previous years !. Last year, 2002, Imports of Phosphorus resulted in a new all time record with more than 324,000 metric tons of P2O5 in TSP, DAP, MAP and NPK (see fig 4).
