Banding P on Low P Soils Makes Larger Profits

Wheat is a major crop in the Pampas of Argentina. Soil phosphorus (P) availability is generally low in Pampean soils. A study comparing broadcast and banding P applications shows significant differences at low soil P levels between the two methods, favoring banding application. These differences diminished as soil Bray P levels increased above 20 ppm.

Grain yield responses with soil P below 10 ppm were 60% greater with banding compared to broadcast. Banding increased net profit by US$50/ha over broadcast at low soil Bray P levels.
