Variable Rate Nitrogen Management: Spatial Analysis
InfoAg 2001 featured presentations from both public and private sector agronomists working to improve variable rate application of nitrogen in Ontario, Canada. The two Powerpoint presentations below focus on different aspects. The first, "MANAGEMENT ZONES AND NITROGEN MANAGEMENT: VARIABLE RATE OR OPTIMAL RATE?" is by Doug Aspinall, OMAFRA, Guelph, ON and Ivan O’Halloran, University of Guelph, Ridgetown, ON. The second, "VARIABLE RATE NITROGEN MANAGEMENT: SPATIAL ANALYSIS", is by Tom Bruulsema, Potash & Phosphate Institute of Canada, Guelph, ON, with Theo Schelhaas & Jim Shaw, Cargill Limited and Karon Tracey-Cowan, Agri-Food Laboratories, Embro, ON. Both of these show that while variable rate nitrogen holds promise for increasing nitrogen use efficiency, many complex factors govern the optimum rate of nitrogen, and predicting it in advance remains difficult.
