The Fertility of North American Soils

This is a report of the phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertility of the soils of North America. The data used in this report were provided by 70 major North American public and private soil testing laboratories that analyzed 3.4 million soil samples submitted to them by farmers and their advisers for the purpose of determining the amount of plant nutrients to apply prior to the 2005 growing season. As such, this summary is probably the most comprehensive evaluation of the status of soil fertility in North America ever conducted.

Gear Up for 2008 Crop Management

Many crop producers in the U.S. are facing some unique circumstances as the 2007 harvest is followed by important planning and management decisions for the 2008 season. For example, what about corn after corn instead of a corn/soybean rotation? What are the options to improve N use efficiency? How can growers estimate nutrient use efficiency on the farm? IPNI North America staff have prepared some timely articles to help address these issues.

Fall Fertilization

As the calendar turns to fall each year, most farmers and their advisers are preoccupied with harvest and all the related priorities that go with it. Of course that’s important, but fall is also prime-time to address some economic and management questions on crop and forage nutrition, tillage systems, fertilizer placement options, soil testing, and other practices.
