Introducing: The International Plant Nutrition Institute

With the dawning of January 1, 2007, the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI)---a new global, scientific, agronomic organization---officially began operations. At the same time, the Potash & Phosphate Institute (PPI) ceased to exist. During late 2006, IPNI was established by a resolution adopted unanimously by its founding members. The Board of Directors of PPI committed its scientific staff to IPNI.

The founding members of IPNI are: Agrium Inc.; Arab Potash Company; Belarusian Potash Company; Bunge Fertilizantes S.A.; CF Industries Holdings, Inc.; Groupe OCP; Intrepid Mining, LLC; K+S KALI GmbH; Mosaic; PotashCorp; Saskferco; Simplot; Sinochem Hong Kong Ltd.; Spur Ventures Inc.; SQM; Terra Industries Inc.; and Uralkali. Mr. Patricio Contesse of SQM was elected as the first Chairman of the IPNI Board of Directors. Mr. Mike Wilson of Agrium Inc. is Vice Chairman and Mr. Stephen R. Wilson of CF Industries Holdings, Inc. is Finance Committee Chair. An executive committee was also elected to serve 2-year terms.

Membership of IPNI is composed of fertilizer industry companies that are basic producers of nitrogen (N), and/or phosphate (P), and/or potash (K), and/or sulfur (S) for agricultural use. Large retail organizations that do not qualify as basic producers of N, P, K, or S may qualify as associate members. The purpose of IPNI is to help provide a coordinated scientific foundation of fertilizer nutrient use and to scientifically address associated environmental issues. Other non-profit associations or organizations who support the Institute’s purposes may be eligible as Affiliate members.

The mission of IPNI is to develop and promote scientific information about the responsible management of plant nutrients for the benefit of the human family.

IPNI began operations with effective scientific programs already in place in North America, Brazil, Northern Latin America, Latin America--Southern Cone, China, India, and Southeast Asia. The organization expects to establish program activities in Eastern and Western Europe and the Middle East.

Dr. Terry L. Roberts was named first President of IPNI and is located at the headquarters office in Norcross, Georgia. Dr. Paul E. Fixen is Senior Vice President, Americas Group Coordinator, and Director of Research, based in Brookings, South Dakota. Dr. Adrian M. Johnston is now Vice President and Asia Group Coordinator, based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Dr. Clifford S. Snyder was appointed in January 2007 to the new position of Nitrogen Program Director. While he will continue to be based in Conway, Arkansas, his responsibilities now extend internationally regarding IPNI efforts to encourage best management practices for nitrogen in crop production and environmental protection.
