IPNI Staff Presentations at the 2008 Annual ASA-CSSA-SSSA Meetings
The joint annual meetings of the Tri-Societies ... the American Society of Agronomy (ASA)/Soil Science Society of America (SSSA)/Crop Science of America (CSSA) ... were held recently in Houston, Texas. Two of our staff were honored at this meeting in recognition of their contributions to the science of agriculture. Dr. Tom Bruulsema, IPNI Northeast Regional Director, was named a Fellow of SSSA and Dr. Harold Reetz, Jr., Director of External Support and FAR, received the Agronomic Service Award. Such recognition by their scientific peers is a testament to the quality of scientists that work for IPNI.
Other staff were involved in organizing symposia and presenting papers at the meetings, which are available as PDF documents, including the presentation by IPNI President, Dr. Terry Roberts, on Global Potassium Reserves and Potassium Fertilizer Use.

Fertilizer Best Management Practices (BMP's)
THE CONCEPT of fertilizer best management practices (BMPs) is not new...it was first introduced almost 20 years ago. Fertilizer BMPs are more important today than ever before and need to be based on a simple concept of matching the nutrient supply with crop requirements, while minimizing nutrient losses from fi elds. All fertilizer consumers should apply the correct nutrient in the amount needed, timed and placed to meet crop demand —“right product, right rate, right time, and right place.”

Better Crops with Plant Food
Better Crops with Plant Food Issue No. 4 of 2008 Now Available Online

The current issue of Better Crops with Plant Food magazine (2008, No. 4) from IPNI features articles from around the world, many with a focus on nutrient use efficiency and improving best management of crop nutrition. From China are articles on N use efficiency in irrigated cotton and optimizing doublecropped wheat-maize (corn) rotations. Topics from India outline improvements in the rice-wheat cropping system and rainfed rice production. A story from Argentina discusses P management in the Pampas, while a Canadian report highlights alternative sources and methods for N fertilization in winter wheat. Articles from the USA look into specifics of N management in rice and irrigated cotton, and there is an overview of N sources for organic crop production. IPNI Scholar Award winners are announced, new staff members in Russia and India are introduced, and other news items are included. A back-cover commentary presents some thoughts on managing plant nutrients for world food needs.

Nutrients and Hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico — An Update on Progress, 2008
Based on data presented here and in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ScienceAdvisory Board (EPA SAB) 2008 report, there is reason to believe that declines in discharge of N and P to the Gulf of Mexico are proceeding through voluntary actions by farmers, their advisers, and their suppliers. Driven by global economic pressures, local and personalprofitability goals and objectives, and a greater environmental consciousness and stewardshipethic, farmers and practitioners are increasingly implementing fertilizer BMPs.These accomplishments are noteworthy and herald progress toward improved fertilizernutrient use efficiency, which may lead to reductions in N and P loss from farm fields andagricultural watersheds.

Potential Biofuels Influence on Nutrient Use and Removal in the U.S.

A major challenge to the fertilizer industry and those conducting research on nutrient management will be the development of nutrient management approaches focused on ecological crop intensification where productivity is increased to meet growing demand and the environment is improved. Failing to take this challenge seriously will likely lead one day to headlines in the media about the “misadventure” of biofuels and the loss of a tremendous opportunity for agriculture.

IPNI Supports New Professorship to Explore Link between Fertilizer and Food Nutrition
"The quality of the food we eat is directly related to the fertility of the soil where the crop was grown," said IPNI President Dr. Terry L. Roberts. IPNI has committed funding in support of the new “Nutrients for Life Foundation Professor of Soil and Food Crop Nutrition” position at Oklahoma State University (OSU). The professorship endowment is being supported in cooperation with The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) and the Nutrients for Life Foundation.

Fact Sheet/Rebuttal Seeks to Present Correct Information

Information from an article titled "Manganese Nutrition of Glyphosate-Resistant and Conventional Soybeans", which appeared in Better Crops with Plant Food Issue No. 4 of 2007, was misquoted and misrepresented in the April 20, 2008, edition of The Independent, a British newspaper. Dr. Barney Gordon of Kansas State University, a researcher and author of the original article in Better Crops, has prepared a one-page response to the inaccurate information which appeared in The Independent.
