Alfalfa producers, predominantly in Northeast Iowa but also in other alfalfa producing regions of Iowa, have noted fields with areas where alfalfa growth is stunted and the foliage is a “pale green” color and growth is poor. These areas are most often irregular and scattered throughout fields, and can occupy significant field area. Producers are asking if this is S deficiency and if there is hidden deficiency in the areas observed as having good growth.
The project will provide an improved understanding and documentation of the observed poor alfalfa growth, factors contributing to poor alfalfa growth, need for S fertilization in Northeast Iowa alfalfa production, and ultimately improved alfalfa production and quality. This work will help raise alfalfa yields; allow for high quality, locally grown alfalfa hay for dairy producers; and increase percentage perennial vegetative soil cover on fragile and erosive soils. |
