Groundnut is an important oil seed crop of Orissa, cultivated through out the year in about 2.56 lakh hectares with a production of 4.58 lakh tonnes. Majority of groundnut growing soils in the state are light textured acidic soils devoid of organic C, exhibiting deficiencies of not only NPK but also secondary and micronutrients such as S, Zn and B. Farmers generally use sub-optimal doses of NPK (20:40:40 kg/ha along with 250 kg of gypsum) and there is a wide gap between the current average productivity (1791 kg/ha) and the potential achievable yield (more than 3000 kg/ha). Further, the current productivity is showing a declining trend. There is an opportunity to maximize the yields of groundnut through improved nutrient management and thus this study was taken up with the following objectives.
1. To develop an improved nutrient management strategy for groundnut grown in Orissa
2. To study the role of improved nutrient management on productivity and quality of groundnut
3. To study the cost economics of improved nutrient management in groundnut vis-a vis current farmer fertilization practice |
