Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) is the most widely used improved forage grass in Florida. It is estimated that bahiagrass pastures occupies about 2.5 million ha in south Florida. Bahiagrass is predominantly grown on low fertility, acidic Spodosols, which constitute over 3.4 million ha in Florida. Nitrogen is an important agronomic input for bahiagrass production. However, the increasing costs of commercial fertilizers and environmental problems associated with improper fertilization management have prompted the need to re-examine efficient sources to supply pastures with N. Although extensive research has documented response of bahiagrass to excessively high N rates, the effects of fertilizer sources applied at rates normally used in cow calf operations in Florida on N recovery and leaching potential are not well understood. |
