Project Details:
References Justification Objectives Methodology
Field experiments will be conducted at three sites in Kansas (Blaine, Manhattan, and Hays) during the 2008-2009 winter wheat growing season. A Split-plot design will be used with whole plot treatments being pre-plant N source (manure or fertilizer) and sub-plot treatments being top-dress N rates (28-0-0 fertilizer at 0 to 80 lb N/A) applied in season and a reference treatment of 120 lb/A N will be applied at planting. An active optical remote sensor GreenSeeker RT 200 will be used to determine the NDVI for each plot. Sensing will occur near the Feekes 5 growth stage. Statistical analysis by SAS statistical software version 9.2 (SAS Institute Inc, Cary, NC). PROC MIXED will be used for comparison of treatments. Top-dress N allocations will be used to determine the N response at each site. Optimum top-dress N rates will be calculated for whole-plot treatments based on N response to sub-plot N rates. The optimum top-dress N rates will be compared to N recommendations calculated based on KSU extension publications (KSU recommendation) and the Greenseeker (Greenseeker recommendation). The KSU recommendations are from the method of (Leikam et al., 2003) and the Greenseeker recommendations are from the KSU sensor-based N rate calculator (Tucker, 2009). Thus, more exacting N recommendations on manured fields will be a likely outcome of this effort.
