On-farm Research on Potassium Fertilization in Rainfed Pulses, 2003

The enhancement of pulse productivity via balanced fertilization will greatly assist farmers subject to the risks of rainfed farming. Pulses, including green gram and black gram, are grown on 1.0 million hectares in Tamil Nadu.

The productivity of pulses in Tamil Nadu is well below the national average due to imbalanced fertilizer application, among other reasons. Potassium (K) application to pulses is commonly neglected based on the general assumption and official recommendations that soils in the region do not need K. On-farm trials were initiated to determine the impact of K on pulses under a farmer’s field situation and to create awareness among farmers about the need for K in pulse crop production. Four farmers in each of five districts were selected during rabi season (November to February). SZ India-44
