Interpretive Summaries:
An intensive wheat ICM program in Maryland, 1991
These demonstrations are showing that consistently higher yields of wheat can be produced in marginal and good years. More farmers are adopting the intensive wheat system developed as a result of FAR support. Farmers are willing to apply additional inputs because they know the potential exists for increased profits as their production cost/acre decrease when yields increase. The average wheat yield in Maryland continues to increase to a record of 53 bu/A in 1991. Some farmers are reporting farm average wheat yields above 80 bu/A.
A record number of wheat acres were planted this fall in the Mid-Atlantic region. Virtually all high yielding varieties were sold out just three weeks into the fall planting season. At the current good wheat price and good fall planting season, the potential exists for record wheat yields in 1992. The FAR supported program is providing the University of Maryland with a tool to demonstrate to farmers that the intensive wheat management system is a profit maker for them. MD-04F
