Interpretive Summaries:
Best management practices hay production, 1996
Fertilizer application timing on coastal bermudagrass is important in maximizing nutrient use efficiency and yield. The effectiveness of two fertilizer application timing treatments was investigated in this study. Both treatments utilized balanced fertilizer applications. Total amounts of nutrients applied were equal for each treatment. The “conventional” treatment consisted of an application at spring green-up, and subsequent topdress applications immediately following each harvest. The alternate treatment consisted of an application at spring green-up, and subsequent topdress applications 2 weeks before each harvest. Although the early 1996 season was exceptionally dry, the alternate treatment yielded 5% more forage than the conventional treatment. The results of this study emphasize the importance of fertilization timing in maximizing coastal bermudagrass production. TX-27F
