Site-Specific Nutrient Management for Corn in Colombia, 2008
Six sites located within the main corn-producing regions of Colombia were established during 2007 using omission plot techniques. Fully fertilized plots were compared against plots with individual omission of N, P, K, S, and Mg. The main objective of the study was to determine yield potential and yield goals according to the climate and soil conditions at each site. Results will be used to formulate site-specific nutrient recommendations (SSNM) for high yielding corn.
Across sites, treatments including all nutrients provided yields ranging from 6.1 to 7.9 t/ha compared to yields of 4.3 to 7.1 t/ha for normal farmer practice. Omitting N decreased yields in all six sites while omitting P, K, S, and Mg decreased yields in about 40% of the sites. The selected sites reflect the changing conditions that control corn yield in the tropics.
More sites will be selected next season in the same general area, a potential fertilizer recommendation domain, to have an understanding of the variability among seasons and sites. One SSNM treatment will be included in the study. This treatment will be calculated from the difference in yield (nutrient demand) among the complete treatment and each omission plot. Fine-tuning of this treatment will continue for 2 to 3 years until fertilizer recommendations are developed for each domain. Colombia-14
