Project Details:
Justification Objectives Methodology
The cost of nitrogen (N) sources ranged over a relative wide range this past year. Urea-ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) was $0.10/lb N cheaper than other sources. Applying UAN to wheat subjects the source to increased urease activity associated with green plants or surface applications. Both of these mechanisms may increase N volatilization losses from the urea component of the UAN. Producers also apply N to wheat beyond the recommended March 15 application date during years of adverse soil conditions. Extending the application period for applying UAN may increase leaf burning because of larger plants and may increase N losses.
