Oil palm agronomic management decision support project (OMP7), 1999

This oil palm project aims to provide the oil palm estate sector with a set of first class tools to help managers achieve large and sustainable oil yields. Three oil palm management handbooks have been prepared for sale throughout the oil palm region. Each handbook details proper procedures for oil palm nursery, development, and mature plantation management. All the handbooks will be made available over the PPI/PPIC web site in portable document format. Agronomic database management software and supporting agronomic services are currently provided to three large oil palm estate companies respectively in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. The database software provides oil palm estates with the means to compile and analyze agronomic data and prepare site-specific fertilizer recommendations based on an analysis of each field’s agronomic characteristics. Geographic information system capability has now been added to the software, which can now provide data for preparation of spatial analysis maps showing key agronomic parameters. In the future, the project aims to use the database to investigate nutrient use efficiency in oil palm. The handbooks and database software provide powerful tools to improve plantation performance and optimize the efficiency of P and K fertilizer nutrient use. INDONESIA-23
