The potential for K deficiency in apples is increasing in the coarse textured soils of the Okanagan Valley as growers re-plant their orchards in high density plantings and begin using drip irrigation. This project is showing that fertigating these intensive orchard systems with K maintains adequate soil solution K below the drip irrigation emitters and higher levels of K in leaf tissue. Applied K is also increasing fruit yield, size and quality. Growers have been concerned that fertilizing apples with K would have a negative effect on calcium nutrition resulting in storage disorders, but that has not occurred in this study. Managing K nutrition is one area growers in intensive orchard systems are going to have to pay closer attention to in the future.
